Another story marked by an obsession with flying. It was inspired by the true story of a German boy who immigrated to the United States, became a pilot and enlisted in the air force during the Vietnam War. With the cool detachment of a documentary film maker, the director (and narrator) recounts Dieter’s escape on foot from a Vietnamese POW camp through Laos and into Thailand, to the accompaniment of an unsettling soundtrack. Herzog’s presence on the screen bears witness to his fascination and identification with Dieter, another of the many Herzog heroes driven by a dream that takes him to the outer limits of human experience and to a close encounter with death, breaking through in the end to a new awareness. A long shot from cinema-vérité, in this television documentary Herzog continues his search for the inscrutable inner truth that permeates all human existence.
