An uneasy wind blows over Canadian oil-yielding territory. There is tension in the air. For the first time from decades the citizens of Alberta, traditionally proud of their petroleum industry, begin to suspect that something is not right and ask questions regarding the way these plants function. The change in public opinion is more evident here along the banks of Clearwater River, in the central region of Alberta, than it is anywhere. Here the residents have decided to oppose Shell’s plans for expansion, which envisage the construction of a new well for extracting natural gas in this area.
On March 20, 2001, Alberta’s Department of Energy and Services, recognising that the preoccupations were founded and that the citizens’ requests were valid, scuppered the project that the petrol company was presenting and stopped it from beginning work.
The film cleverly documents all the phases of this intense conflict, presenting the reasoning of both sides and highlighting the difficulties arising from the impact of industrial activity in human health and on the environment.
