Raymond Queneau's passion for mathematics and science is well known. In this short movie, the great French "language juggler" turns a serious arithmetics lecture about the properties of integers into an unstoppable wordplay, where the statement of absolutely correct properties intermingles with paradoxical remarks, thereby releasing a surrealistic power that transforms mathematical jargon into an amazing linguistic experiment - one bicyclist plus two bicyclists equals three sportsmen, regardless of the numbers on their jerseys, whereas one wolf plus two sheep does not equal three animals but rather a hearty meal: so much for the mysteries of arhitmetics! The authors intended to produce a whole cinematic encyclopedia based on the absurd, but they never went beyond letter A. The Italian version of this film is excellent. The difficult task of translation was performed by Montedison Progetto Cultura.
