Since the Babylonians began, about 4000 years ago, to make the first observations of the sky in order to predict the apparent phases of moon, planets and sun, philosophers and scientists all over the world have spent much of their lives trying to resolve the mysteries of the celestial vault. If once an astronomer’s studies regarded nothing more that the movement of planets, nowadays scientists are trying to reply to far more profound questions, regarding the form and evolution of the universe.
Nowadays almost all cosmologists have accepted the Big Bang model that states that our universe came about after an enormous explosion. They then began to ask themselves more specific questions. The general theory of relativity tells us that matter curves space-time so what is the true form of the Universe? How far do its confines go, if we may, indeed speak of confines? Two rival groups of astronomers try to reply to these questions. Despite more probable expectations, their calculations demonstrate that the universe undergoes exponential expansion. In an attempt to confirm their surprising observations they discover new stars being born and manage to map the enormous groups of galaxies. This high definition documentary is accompanied by extraordinary animation and illustrates the revolutionary idea of an expanding universe.
