Antibiotics are undoubtedly the greatest discovery of all time in the field of health. For the first time in history, man has managed to neutralize microbes. This is a fundamental victory which will lead society to an unprecedented structural, social and cultural revolution. Thanks to this discovery, life expectancy in Western societies has increased by several decades overnight. At the same time infant mortality has virtually disappeared, as have such serious diseases as the plague and tuberculosis. The discovery of antibiotics represents more than just scientific progress, as it will gradually give man the illusion that he can control disease and dominate the whole of the natural world. But the war between microbes and men has been raging for thousand of years. It has laid waste to entire populations, and left an indelible imprint on men's minds. With the arrival of antibiotics in the 1930's, humans won a major, but not a final, victory. With 3 billion years of experience of life on Earth, microbes are already one step ahead. They have recently acquired techniques capable of making medication obsolete, and can even transmit this knowledge to other microbes.
The Antibiotics adventure is a two-part film which tells the story of one of the most fascinating episodes in the eternal war between man and microbes. The Festival presents the first one, entitled Birth of an Empire that will describe the current situation, then, through the history of the last seventy years, will attempt to answer the question: “How did we end uplike this?
