This series of four on-line videos specially developed for very young audiences was posted on the Web during the national Science Week Ireland celebrated in November 2007 under the supervision of Discover Science & Engineering (DSE), the country’s national science promotion programme.
Four well-known Irish celebrities demonstrate their favourite gadgets. For example, a television presenter talks about the science behind her favourite hair straightener and an international rugby player talks about his love for computer games.
Obviously enough, the video does not mean to provide an in-depth explanation of how these objects work. Rather, the lively, laid-back interviews with well-known celebrities aim to increase interest in science, technology, innovation and engineering among students, teachers and members of the public.
The video to be screened at the Festival features an Irish TV star, Brian Ormond. A young singer and TV host, Ormond mentions the iPod as his cult object. The discussion then moves on to laptop computers and other minor gadgets, such as the electric toothbrush.
The whole series is currently on-line on the www.scienceweek.ie. website.
