An animated adaptation of Edwin Abbott’s well-known novel Flatland (1884), Flatland, The Film is a journey into an imaginary world where everything, people and objects alike, are bi-dimensional and strict social rules, as well as a rigid geometrical society, are enforced.
A Square lives here with his wife Frau A and their children. Three days before the year 3000, a rebellion starts among Chromatists (colours are forbidden in Flatland!) and A Square struggles to protect his family. Amidst such turmoil, a mysterious visitor from the 3rd dimension arrives: A Sphere. According to A Sphere, Flatlanders need to learn that there is another dimension called “height.” A Square must spread the word as an Apostle of the 3rd dimension. But having been flat his entire life, A Square is unable to comprehend these “3 dimensions.” A Sphere abducts A Square from Flatland to show him the true nature of space and the universe. But in so doing, he endangers the very nature of space-time, potentially destroying all of creation…
Abbott’s novel became popular for its satire of conformism and cultural intolerance - hot topics even today. A very lively “transcription” of it, the film features a penetrating irony. Those who have read the book will find it particularly enjoyable.
