This documentary shows and describes one of the wonders of ancient temple sculpture, namely the metopes of Temple C at Selinunte, dedicated to Apollo. Metopes are stone tiles usually sculpted in bas-relief, found on the facade of Doric buildings. SIBA, an institute set up by the University of Lecce, has captured, processed in 3D and virtually displayed the metopes of Temple C at Selinunte, as well as designing the Selinunte Room of the Regional Archaeological Museum in Palermo. The video highlights the new methods available to experts and art enthusiasts, including 2D and 3D digital technologies, computer vision and computer graphics.
The Metopes of Selinunte was filmed within the framework of project Land-Lab – a multimedia archaeological research, training and communication laboratory co-funded by the European Union. Developed to better leverage and display the historical, cultural and archaeological assets of Puglia and Sicily with the help of innovative techniques, the project aims at virtually recreating the historical, archaeological and environmental situation of ancient Southern Italy while at the same time developing a multimedia information system that can be accessed by different user groups.
