New Stories are in Science

The aim of the round table is to explore how changes both to the world and to communications technology affect our communications challenge. For one thing, we need to illuminate through all AV media the growing impact of science and technology in all walks of life. Looked at another way, science and technology offers TV and other media a host of new stories and scenarios for their creative talents. But another angle comes from new ways or opportunities for AV communication, from multiple digital TV channels to mobile phone "programmes" and a wide variety of web presentations.

The round table offers the chance to explore the challenges from many viewpoints:

  1. Europe's (and wider) need for more scientists and engineers and the media's role in encouraging recruitment;
  2. The desirability of a better scientifically informed population in general and the key AV media role;
  3. The new technologies in AV communication and the challenge for programme designers;
  4. Bridging the arts-science divide in encouraging traditionally arts based areas like TV drama to embrace more science;
  5. The opportunities for science in other popular TV genres like Sport or Current Affairs;
  6. The roles of traditional science slots and of science in news or in pod or web casts in awakening/promoting interest in scientific issues.

Speakers at the round table include

Patrick Vittet-Philippe (Press and Information Officer, Directorate General Research, European Commission)
Heinz Oberhummer (Vienna University of Technology, Cinema and Science Project)
Alfonso Cometti (Mediaset)
Andrew Millington (Festival CoDirector, EuroPAWS Director)
Pino Donghi (Segretario generale, Fondazione Sigma-tau)
