The emergence of the theory of evolution in the early 19th century upset the millenarian image of man as a being unchanged since the act of creation. While Copernicus had pinpointed our rightful place in space, Darwin caused another revolution by determining our place in nature. In this era of post-neo- Darwinism and resurgent Creationism in the USA, a documentary on evolution is quite apt. This film recounts the life of Darwin from his childhood as the restless pupil of Dr. Butler, through the legendary voyages of the Beagle and into his old age. The Beagle took Darwin to Africa, where he encountered the African peoples and studied and catalogued new species of animals. He then sailed to Patagonia, up the Pacific coast to the famous Galapagos Islands. His observations of the similarities and differences among different species of Galapagos finches led to his theory of evolution. The debate that followed the publication of The Origin of Species in 1859 continued well beyond the death of the English naturalist, in 1882. This documentary includes magnificent drawings of the animal species studied by Darwin.
